607. What about talk that AI-GC will mean the death of photography?

1. That will never happen.
By definition AI-generated content can never do what photography does better than any other medium, that is:
to visually record — in a fraction of a second and in precise detail — “what one person saw, in one small corner of the world, at one unrepeatable moment in time.” (Quoted from “D” in FAQ #120)

2. Why does it matter what photography can do that AI cannot do?
It matters because most of the billions of photographs made every day are created to serve as a record (“This is where I was and what I saw”) and AI cannot help with that.
Of course, for any photos that are not intended to serve as “records,” AI-GC is a helpful addition to the post-exposure toolset. (See “B” in #608.)
