“The only way of finding ‘islands of trust’ in a sea of AI slop is by capitalizing on the public’s appetite for authenticity.”

People want to know which pictures they can trust.

  • 1. AI is changing public perceptions of online content

    • Before AI-generated content, most people did not see much need to discern different levels of trustworthiness between image sources (“Oh, I saw it online” was often as specific as people got).

    • But as AI-generated content becomes routine, the public will look for select “go-to” image sources (those “islands of trust”) that can provide confirmation when an image looks remarkable.

    It is easy for any photo publisher to “wall off” TTG images from images that contain AI-GC.

  • 2. Deceptive images can now be spread across the world in a fraction of a second

    TTG is built on the premise that the coming flood of AI-generated images will not be slowed globally

    • by laws;
    • by AI promoters’ self-restraint;
    • by disclosure labels applied to a few pictures in select countries; or
    • by expecting the typical citizen to “get really good at studying every picture super closely.”

  • 3. There is only one viable solution

    Helping the worldwide public to identify trustworthy image sources is the only realistic solution to avoiding deception by visual disinformation.

    No other approach under consideration will work on a global scale.

    How can it happen? Only frequently applied trust tests will help people distinguish between settings where they do trust a label like TTG vs. settings where they do not trust a label like TTG.
